Jadeja and Ashwin guide India to brink of victory

Considering the wicket in Mohali is still quite flat, it is not impossible to imagine England batting out an entire day, despite already losing four wickets, even if it remains unlikely.

Hameed remained unbeaten on 59 as England set a victory target of 103 runs for the hosts.

They will now start day four at the Bindra Stadium trailing by 56 runs and in genuine danger of going 2-0 down in the series.

Bairstow's wicket belonged more to wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel, who took a brilliant low catch off Jayant, when the English right-hander went back into the crease only to end up nicking it behind.

On a pitch where Moeen Ali and Gareth Batty looked ordinary, Ashwin, with his length and deception, looked more potent.

Ravindra Jadeja celebrates his fifty. Patel reached his half-century off only 39 balls.

As Hameed battled gamely on the final afternoon - without, it seems, the need of a painkilling injection - England were reminded of what they will miss.

Jadeja, who registered his career-best Test score, surpassing his 68 at Lord's in 2014, and Jayant Yadav put on 80 runs for the eighth wicket.

Debutant Jayant, India's "find of the series" once again impressed with his fighting qualities as his gutsy innings ensured that India scored 400-plus for the third consecutive time in the series.

India won the second test in Visakhapatnam by 246 runs.

While spinners got the early breakthroughs for India on Day 4, Mohammed Shami soon got into action.

Indian players congratulate each other at the end of day three of the third Test match between India and England in Mohali. Jadeja took the pressure away from me.

Rashid praised Ben Stokes for getting the prize wicket of Indian captain Virat Kohli. But in scoring a mammoth 537 and pushing India to the wall in the first Test, experts and aficionados had to make a hasty revision of their predictions. In total, they added 97 runs and helped India cross the 300-mark in the 93rd over.

Starting from overnight 271-6, Ashwin and Jadeja took India past 300. He came down the track to loft Jadeja for a six and a thickish outside edge off Umesh fetched him a boundary.

Mercifully, Jayant slapped a simple catch to mid-on without addition to go in the same over - and Stokes completed his third five-wicket haul in Tests when Umesh edged behind to close the innings at last.

Ben Stokes, who produced a lion-hearted effort with the ball to claim 5-73, earned a breakthrough when he dismissed Ashwin for 72, a composed knock including 11 fours.

Root survived two leg-before appeals in one Jadeja over but otherwise looked rock solid as he brought up his 25th test fifty with an elegant boundary before raising the bat in muted celebration.
