Record number of Irish passports issued so far this year

A record number of Irish passports - more than 700,000 - have been issued so far this year.

They announced on Twitter over 700,000 of the documents were issued in 2016.

The Republic's Passport Service had already seen a surge in demand prior to Brexit, due to an increase in outbound travel, the Euro 2016 football championships and new United States travel requirements for biometric passports.

The rise is only less than 5% in total on the previous year, but the increase in the number of applications from Britain appears to be significantly higher.

Data leading up to October released by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade shows applications for Irish passports from Great Britain were up 42% on past year. In the three months after the contentious Brexit vote, applications for the ID papers were up more than 17,300 compared to the same period a year ago.

That is an increase of just over 12,500 applications.

The office said previous year they issued 669,806 passports and this is the "first time ever" they broke the 700,000 mark.

The department also say the outcome of the British EU referendum in June has "added to the demand".
