AT&T unveils live video streaming service, DirecTV Now

It's also giving new customers a free Apple TV with three months of prepaid service or a free $39 Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote with one month of prepaid service.

At the same time, AT&T and Reese Witherspoon plan to create a new entertainment destination featuring high quality and exclusive content, especially for fans of female-driven stories.

Starting at $35 per month for over 60 channels, the new service has several deals we thought you should know about. Users will be able to get about 60 channels for $35, 80 for $50, 100 for $60, and 120 for $70.

There are some limitations. While it cost more than Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu and other established competitors that charge about $10 per month, AT&T's new DirecTV Now service starts at $35 per month but offers a competitive number of content choices. Buyers of DirectTV were asked for a two-year commitment and credit check previously, but those requirements will not be required for the streaming service.

AT&T Update: How Does DirecTV Work? AT&T said it is also launching an ad-supported free version that samples some of the content of the paid service. But unlike Netflix or Hulu, DirecTV Now is meant to provide a full cablelike lineup for households.

The platform's content will include live and on-demand video from Walt Disney, Twenty-First Century Fox, Viacom Inc and Scripps Networks Interactive. CBS declined to comment.

AT&T has also teamed up with MCN Fullscreen Media to make the service available to mobile video users on its network. He said the company is discussing with the league whether it can be added.

AT&T isn't the first to market.

DirecTV Now joins Sony PlayStation Vue and Sling TV in offering a la carte TV lineups previously only available through cable and satellite companies. DirecTV Now is as important to AT&T as the U-verse broadband launch about 10 years ago, AT&T Entertainment Group CEO John Stankey said at the press event.
