Cubs go all-in on dynasty with Jose Quintana blockbuster

White Sox general manager Rick Hahn has made no secret of his willingness to trade veterans for prospects as part of a long-term rebuilding project. We've been willing to trade within our division, which has far more impact on our ability to compete. If the Blue Jays decide they're going to trade Josh Donaldson now, rather than wait for the offseason or trying to extend him, the Cubs have dolled out a hefty package for a premium player, which only helps their cause.

#WhiteSox have acquired OF Eloy Jiménez, RHP Dylan Cease, 1B Matt Rose & INF Bryant Flete from the Cubs in exchange for LHP José Quintana.

"Sure, we joke around about it", Frazier said.

It seemed like Quintana had been having trouble since being named the "ace" of a young White Sox team, and although he has had some nice stretches in that span it's no question that he performed better behind the arm of Chris Sale.

In case you're curious about whether or not the Cubs and White Sox make deals often, the answer is "no".

Now, who would have thought that he'd still be wearing a White Sox uniform in July? The 20-year old Jimenez, signed as an amateur out of Cuba in 2013 for a $2.8 million bonus, is hitting.271/.351/.490 in 42 games in high-A this season, following a year where he slashed.329/.369/.532 with 14 homers and eight steals in A-ball.

"We view him as one of the most exciting prospects in the game today", Hahn said. It's important to take a step back and realize where you are. Usually it occurs via the top of the draft or global moves similar with what we did with Luis Robert a few weeks back.

The Quintana deal helps the Cubs for 2017 and for the longer term. Cease is 1-2 with a 2.79 ERA (18 R/16 ER) and limiting batters to a.213 average across 13 starts.

Eloy Jimenez is 6-foot-4, over 200 pounds with lots of muscle. Jose Quintana to the Cubs has made nearly too much sense ever since the Sox entered rebuild mode. "He's a potential front end of the rotation starter, three-plus pitches and tremendous makeup". They also had the 11th, 23rd, 28th, 36th, 59th and 68th ranked prospects (pitcher Michael Kopech, outfielder Luis Robert, pitcher Lucas Giolito, pitcher Reynaldo Lopez, pitcher Carson Fulmer and catcher Zack Collins, respectively).

Flete, 24, hit.305/.355/.425 with six home runs and 37 RBI in 300 PA with Myrtle Beach mostly playing second base and a little shortstop.

With the addition of Jimenez and Cease, the White Sox have nine of the Top 100 prospects in baseball, according to MLB.com. "You never know when they'll be promoted or traded".

Now, it appears that the Cubs are not done making moves, or at least would like to make one more.

This season, Cubs starting pitching has a 4.66 ERA after having one of the top staffs previous year.
