Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 starts getting Nougat update

Xiaomi has started updating its Redmi Note 4 budget smartphone to Android v.7.0 Nougat recently. The report also revealed that even some Indian users are getting the update on their phone.

The Facebook page for a group called Greek Xiaomi Lovers posted a screenshot of an updated Redmi Note 4, clearly showing that the Android version number was 7.0 NRD90M. According to a blog post on, the stable version update has arrived as MIUI version (Global) with Android Security patch level for July. It will still take a while for Xiaomi to roll out the MIUI 9 update to Redmi Note 4 handsets in India (China Developer ROM rolls out on August 11th).

Talking to GuidingTech, Xiaomi spokesperson consistently stressed on the fact that the device's pin/pattern/fingerprint scanner is the first barrier of unwanted entry and to exploit any of the vulnerabilities mentioned in the research, this security barrier has to be broken. Hopefully, it will be available in more regions soon.

Powering all this hardware is a 4100mAh battery which can be charged via the microUSB port. Out of the box the Redmi Note 4 came with MIUI v.8.x based on Android v.6.x, Marshmallow. But, only in China.

"MIUI's system app which handles the un-installation of the apps poses a significant threat to Security apps". The company adds its own apps and custom functionality in the operating system making it difficult to update the core Android to a newer version.

The smartphone comes in three variants - 2GB RAM/32GB storage, 3GB RAM/32GB storage variant and 4GB RAM/64GB storage.
