Samsung Bixby voice feature expands to 200 countries

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are now available worldwide.

Samsung will unveil its Note 8 in New York in the early hours of Thursday (AEDT).

Now the electronics giant is rolling Bixby out to new regions including the UK, Australia, Canada and South Africa. Google too is planning on launching a smaller version of the Google Home.

Originally set to roll out in the U.S. and South Korea in the spring with the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus flagship phones, Bixby's arrival was delayed until July.

What makes Bixby different from other voice assistants is that it is deeply integrated with functionalities unique to Samsung devices, said Ian Fogg, analyst at IHS Markit. "But, since Bixby learns more frequently used command terms more quickly, it will take more time for Bixby to fully understand regional dialects that are used less frequently".

"This natural language understanding makes interacting with your smartphone easier and more intuitive".

Samsung has promised further features for its smart assistant such as Bixby Vision, which will allow users to point their phone camera at an object and get relevant information.

Rather than a standalone app, it is designed to work with numerous apps. For example, users who want to combine turning on the do-not-disturb mode, setting a 6 a.m. alarm and activating their phones' blue light filters can configure Bixby to do all of those things with a simple "good night".

In addition to offering quick commands, Bixby can also be personalized to support custom voice commands and shortcuts for multiple functions at once, according to Samsung.

"In the future, Bixby will have the learning power to offer more intelligent and personalised interactions and seamless connections across more devices".

We've heard before that Samsung is working on a Bixby-powered smart speaker, but for the first time, it's official.
