Astros knock out Red Sox, advance to ALCS

Houston will make its first appearance in a Championship Series since beating the St. Louis Cardinals in six games in 2005 when the Astros played in the National League.

"It's amazing that even the best lineup, the best team, can get deflated at some point". This Red Sox team is just soft - and really, it's nothing new.

The AL West champion Astros defeated the Red Sox, 5-4, in a rain-soaked Game 4 of an American League Divisional Series in what was a back-and-forth game until the final out.

"The city of Houston is still rebuilding", he said, "and it's easy for us to look in the rearview mirror and think that the hurricane is over ..." But Giles was able to compose himself on the mound and close out the game for the decisive victory, and his teammates stormed the Fenway Park field in celebration.

Kimbrel entered and threw a wild pitch, advancing the runner to second.

Farrell was ejected from Game 4 of Boston's AL Division Series matchup with the Houston Astros for arguing balls and strikes.

Ownership and Dombrowski decided in the offseason to get back below the luxury-tax threshold and never adequately replaced the retired David Ortiz.

"I thought [Farrell] did a great job".

Boston's decision to leave in ace pitcher Chris Sale - who was on the hill to relieve starter Rick Porcello - in the eighth inning will haunt the team all winter. Then in spring training this year he was slowed by a strained elbow. I'm proud of everybody. It's what we work all off-season for. I sincerely hope Pedroia isn't talking about media scrutiny, because he can't possibly be talking about injuries.

The Astros will open the ALCS on Friday, either at Cleveland or at home against the New York Yankees.

Congratulations to Iceland, which yesterday became the smallest nation ever to qualify for the world cup of soccer.

The Red Sox had held the lead earlier by taking a page out of Houston's strategy - scoring runs with the long ball.

They destroyed Boston in Games 1 and 2 at Minute Maid and were staring at 6-0 in the potential ALDS clincher Sunday in Boston when it all started to fall apart.

With one out in the ninth, Chapman gave up a single to Jason Kipnis and an infield hit to Jose Ramirez, putting runners at first and second. Mookie Betts followed with a hard liner.

Houston went back ahead in the second.

The Red Sox pulled within one during their last turn at bat thanks to a thrilling inside-the-park home run by Rafael Devers, but it wasn't enough for a franchise that has won just a single postseason game since 2014. Benintendi swatted it over the right field wall. That could be determined later Monday night.

"He is one of best", Bird said of Miller. A genuine contender, even if they may not enter the next few Octobers as the favorite. And they always knew that the only way to truly move forward was to not let their next ALDS series slip away.

"I haven't been a part of anything like (this) in my career, and I've been a part of some pretty special teams", said Reddick, again wearing his celebratory American flag Speedo.

Then there were some of the forgotten hitters in the Astros lineup.

Erasing the pain of 2015 and pushing these Astros - still electric and thrilling but tougher and wiser - all the way to the ALCS. Jackie Bradley Jr.'s fell from 26 to 17, Hanley Ramirez from 30 to 23, and Dustin Pedroia's from 15 to 7.

The Red Sox got the next out, but went into the bottom of the eighth trailing, 4-3.

Major changes are needed at Fenway. But who could have expected universal decline up and down it? They need toughening up. Maybe one that can win more than just one playoff game, or dare we wish, even more than two.
