International Friendly Report: Spain v Costa Rica 11 November 2017

Impressive Spain put five unanswered goals past Costa Rica in Saturday night's international friendly in Malaga.

As for Costa Rica, Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas was not involved due to an abductor problem, but there were starts for Celtic's Cristian Gamboa and Sunderland's Bryan Oviedo.

The Real Madrid midfielder was levelled by a dangerous tackle from Ticos centre-back Kendall Waston, who was shown a yellow card in the 62nd minute for the challenge.

In other Central American soccer news, Honduras tied Australia 0-0 in the first of two matches to determine which team will earn a spot at the 2018 World Cup.

With Lewis Hamilton out of qualifying following his crash in Q1, Bottas led the Silver Arrows' challenge for pole in Brazil.

Silva, Isco and Iniesta combined to stunning effect throughout the game, with the Manchester City midfielder laying on the pass for his former Valencia teammate Alba to thrash past Costa Rica's stand-in goalkeeper Danny Carvajal in the sixth minute.

Andres Iniesta added a fifth towards the end to wrap things up, with Costa Rica left realising that they have much to improve upon if they are to emulate their 2014 World Cup showing next year, while Spain already look ready to prove a point in Russia. Carvajal did well to deny Silva's initial effort, but he punched the ball into the path of Morata, who easily converted.

A flurry of substitutions for both sides soon impacted on the play, but Spain scored again once they re-discovered their rhythm. The playmaker rubbed his left thigh as he walked off the pitch. The veteran Barcelona star was allowed to shoot from range and fired into the bottom corner.
