EA makes changes after Star Wars Battlefront II outcry

"The hours I worked at my job to get the $[US] 60 for this game already gave me all the sense of pride and accomplishment I need", Crotalus_Horridus said. "Unlocking a hero is a great accomplishment in the game, something we want players to have fun earning". And we continue to make adjustments based on your feedback as the game launches worldwide this week. "Among other things, we're looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we'll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding and of course attainable via gameplay". The company has now thanked that particular community for its passion. The team is fully committed to listening to our community, continually adjusting the game, and providing even more great Star Wars content over the upcoming months and years of live service updates. And a company response defending the costs became the biggest downvoted comment in Reddit history, and many community members said they were canceling preorders. It's been revealed that gamers will have to undertake an eye-watering 40 hours of gameplay before they're given the chance to unlock the aforementioned characters. That's not two days of casual playing. Or you can purchase these things with real money.

The changes are immediate and will go live to the game (which is now available early through EA's Access service) today, ahead of the wider launch on Friday (17 November).

This makes it harder for those who are unable to buy their way to superiority, making the game less about the skill and more about the wallet size.

If you go to EA's refund page you can see what games are available to refund, and Battlefront 2 isn't listed there either. The game, after all, is aimed at children and some of the mechanics it implements to make players spend more money to gain the advantage over others could be considered gambling. Video game prices have not kept up with inflation, because video game players' expectations haven't, either.

Many responses talk about how this could be easily fixed by cutting the time needed to unlock characters from 40 to 10 hours.

It's the second time EA has tweaked the game's reward mechanics following backlash.

It's a positive change, but also one that is definitely trying to divert attention from the more pressing issue with the game. Unlike 2015's Star Wars Battlefront, all of Battlefront II's DLC characters and maps will be given away for free to all players, but the game introduces microtransactions in the form of loot crates to compensate for that.
