Rye Fire in Santa Clarita Grows to 7000 Acres; Evacuations Lifted

Homes along Rye Canyon Loop, the Westridge housing community, and the Valencia Travel Village RV park were ordered to evacuate.

Newhall Ranch Road is also closed between the 126 and Rye Canyon Road, the city reported.

The Rye Fire, a 3-day-old wind-driven blaze in Santa Clarita, was 10 percent contained Thursday after destroying at least one structure and scorching 7,000 acres, authorities said. DEVELOPING: More details will be added to this report as they become available.

Evacuation centers were established at Valencia High School at 27801 Dickason Drive and College of the Canyons, 6455 Rockwell Canyon Road.

Students at West Ranch High School, Rancho Pico Junior High and Oak Hills Elementary are being bussed to College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, according to the city. Officials temporarily closed the 5 freeway. But it was lifted about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The Creek Fire in Sylmar and Thomas Fire in Ventura County have also been blazing out of control for much of Tuesday, prompting California Governor Jerry Brown to declare a state of emergency.

High winds are pushing the fire as well as causing power outages throughout the City. La Reina cancelled all sporting events for Wednesday while the Moorpark and Simi Valley Unified School Districts did the same in addition to cancelling classes. Mandatory evacuations were issued for approximately 1,000 people, with the potential for further evacuations. "Classes are still scheduled", COC wrote on its Twitter.
