Real Madrid home fans prepare to pay tribute — Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo won the fifth Ballon d'Or of his career on Thursday, drawing level with Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo, who this year also helped the national side qualify for the World Cup in Russia next year, won his first Ballon d'Or in 2008 while with Manchester United and collected it again in 2013, 2014 and 2016.

The 2017 winner was unveiled in a dramatic video which slowly zoomed in on the sparkling Eiffel Tower to reveal Ronaldo standing on the podium and holding up the trophy.

"I hope I can play at the greatest level for a few more years", Ronaldo told reporters.

"This year has been great, we won the Champions League and La Liga and, on a personal level, I was a top scorer in the Champions League".

Además, puntualizó que trabajará para acercar a México al mundo y así generar las oportunidades que se requieran para la nación. Sin embargo, aseguró que "México es más que el TLCAN y está listo si no se concreta".

Ronaldo also gave some indication of his Ballon d'Or target when asked what he wants for Christmas, having recently had his fourth child with girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez: "Another, it's a joke, we're going to enjoy the four of us, I want seven Gold Balls and seven children". He will do his best for his club and his national team.

Ronaldo topped the vote from 173 journalists from around the world after guiding Real Madrid to a La Liga and Champions League double last season. I think things are happening for a reason. This is a guy who, despite all of Messi's goals and moments of magic, has well and truly stamped his authority on football of recent times. "It's something I hope to win every year".

And according to Spanish news outlet Diario Gol, Neymar will join Real in the summer of 2019. I was the [top] goalscorer of the Champions League, so I want to thank my team-mates.

The attacker has been in fine form for the French giants, netting 15 goals and chipping in with nine assists in all competitions.
