Payday 2 Launches On Nintendo Switch February 2018

Now Starbreeze Studios and developer Overkill have finally announced that the title will arrive for Nintendo Switch on February 23rd in Europe and Australia and on February 27th, 2018 in North and South America.

While that might not be a big surprise, what puts it into context best is when you look at the Wii U. Over five years it was only able to sell a hugely disappointing 13.5 million units.

It seems that every third-party developer wants a slice of the Nintendo Switch action as Capcom announces its plans to port its games to the hybrid console. The GameCube sold 21.7 million units in its seven-year lifespan, meaning if the Switch continues on its current trajectory - which is certainly unlikely - it will have overtaken the GameCube in under two years since its release.

However, despite this early promise, Nintendo is still some way short of the runaway success of the Nintendo Wii. Within the first year of sale, the Wii had smashed 20 million consoles shipped, jumping up by a whopping seven million units sold between the nine-month to one-year mark. It doubles both as a handheld console and a regular console attached to a TV.

The news comes a few weeks after the video game company upped its first year sales target from 10 million units to 14 million units. What's more, the classic Wii console has been discontinued, so for Chinese fans of Nintendo games that aren't actually all that many opportunities to play. In fact, the biggest contributor to Switch's slowing sales is Nintendo itself. With the growth of digital download services since the Wii's launch, it's likely that Switch owners already own a lot more games than their Wii counterparts may have ever done.
