Apple Store evacuated after iPhone 6S Plus battery combusts and burns employee

A report in Watson says that all three emergency services - police, fire and ambulance - attended the store at Bahnhofstrasse 77 after receiving a call shortly after 10am today.

A man was injured when an iPhone battery overheated and the device exploded at an Apple Store in Zurich, leading to a temporary evacuation of those present on the premises.

Zurich police said the incident occurred as the repair worker was removing the battery, which overheated and burned his hand slightly.

"The staff responded well and correctly", police said.

Now, an out-of-warranty iPhone battery costs $50 less - $29 instead of original price $79 - for anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced, starting in January and available worldwide through December 2018.

Specialists from the Zurich Forensic Institute were studying the battery to determine the cause of the incident. "They sprinkled quartz sand over the overheated battery so that the smoke could be contained and sucked out after switching on the ventilation", a police statement said.

The device exploded abruptly when the repairman was examining the device, without any particular reason, said the Zurich police official.
