[Editorial] Wise to avoid denuclearization during initial round of inter-Korean dialogue

But Tuesday's talks weren't completely harmonious as North Korea's chief negotiator Ri Son-gwon expressed strong discontent over South Korean claims to the media that denuclearization could be part of upcoming South-North military talks.

Trump later said Moon is thankful that talks are underway and that he was told the first round "was extremely good".

Moon briefed Trump on the Panmunjoin talks and went out of his way to thank Trump for his policy of imposing "maximum pressure" on North Korea.

While Moon has been more open to the idea of engagement than either of his two conservative predecessors, he said Seoul and Washington shared a common aim: the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported similar details about the conversation, writing that Moon's office issued a press release in which it said that Moon and Trump "agreed to closely consult on the direction of talks between the South and North Korea in the future".

"We hope that their implementation will serve to de-escalate tensions on the Korean peninsula and foster stability in this region", the ministry said.

Later Wednesday, Trump held his first Cabinet meeting of the year and, according to Reuters, the president said that while he welcomed the possibility of U.S.

Under the deal struck Tuesday at the border village of Panmunjom, North Korea will send officials, athletes, cheerleaders, journalists and others to the Olympics in Pyeongchang, a mountainous county near the border. He told reporters in Seoul Wednesday that he's open to meeting with Kim to resolve the North Korean nuclear standoff, although he said the success of such a summit must be guaranteed before the meeting can be realized.

Seoul responded with an offer of a high-level dialogue, and last week the hotline between the neighbours was restored after being suspended for nearly two years.

The White House said Wednesday that Pence will attend the opening ceremonies of the games, scheduled for February 9 in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Further, Twitter stated that a decision to shut down an account controlled by a country's leader "would also not silence that leader, but it would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions".

Experts fear that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would stop cooperation after the games are over. He said Pyongyang is not targeting South Korea, nor China or Russian Federation.
