Intel's Spectre patches can cause reboot problems in old chips

Windows 10 is only on a quarter of PCs. Meltdown is limited to just Intel processors. The browser patches are intended to stop the attack vectors through the browsers.

By the start of this week, however, it appeared to have changed its stance. Although some vendors have downplayed the potential risk from these flaws, they are of concern because of the inherent complexity to resolve the deficiencies and the significant number of devices that have the flaw.

Other news announced during Krzanich's keynote include the launch of Intel Studios for advanced, 3D video productions; support for Intel-powered virtual reality broadcasts during the coming Olympic Winter Games; and autonomous driving technology partnerships with BMW, Nissan, Volkswagen, SAIC Motor, NavInfo, and Ferrari North America.

Others quickly chimed in with similar complaints on a range of systems, including a setup with a Core i5-3570K processor and GeForce GTX 760 graphics card, and an older laptop powered by an AMD Turion II X2 CPU.

The company's Project Zero team discovered the chip vulnerabilities last year as it outlined in a blog post last week. We are also working directly with data center customers to directly discuss the issue.

How can we patch vulnerabilities on AMD?

'We have received reports from a few customers of higher system reboots after applying firmware updates, ' explains Intel's Navin Shenoy in a security update.

Recientemente, una bolsa principal de bitcoines fue pirateada e incurrió en enormes pérdidas de un gran número de inversionistas. La situación delicada aquí es que la medida tomada por Corea del Sur podría ser imitada por otras naciones.

The chip maker published a table of data showing that older processors handled typical tasks 10% slower at most, after being updated with security patches.

We believe AMD processors are not susceptible due to our use of privilege level protections within paging architecture and no mitigation is required.

Spectre, meanwhile, requires more direct access to the microchip, but affects central processing units from Intel, Advanced Micro Devices Inc and SoftBank Group Corp's ARM. Brian Krzanich expects other industry players to follow similar practices: share security-related hardware innovations and help researchers of security vulnerabilities. Devices that are affected by the flaws span laptops, desktops, mobile devices, cloud-based systems, and more.

Intel has admitted that patches to fix the Spectre and Meltdown chip flaws could slow machines "in some cases".

Where to go from here? Apply the patches in a test environment and test against your applications.

"By 15 January, we will have issued updates for at least 90 percent of Intel CPUs introduced in the past five years, with updates for the remainder of these CPUs available by the end of January".
