Hull City's Ryan Mason retires from football due to head injury

Mason, needed surgery after clashing heads with Chelsea's Gary Cahill while playing for Hull in January 2017, was advised by doctors not to play again.

During his Tottenham career, Mason had loan spells at Swindon, Doncaster, Millwall and Lorient. "Unfortunately, having taken expert medical advice now I have no option but to retire due to the risks involved given the nature of my injury".

Hull City have announced that midfielder Ryan Mason is to retire from professional football with immediate effect, following a head injury sustained last year.

A statement released by Hull on Tuesday morning read: "Ryan has sought the guidance of numerous world renowned neurologists and neurosurgeons who have all advised that a return to competitive football is not advised".

"Ryan would like to put on record his thanks to all at the club who have aided his recovery to this point and he his is indebted to them for their support and compassion over the past 12 months".

Mason played once for England, earning a cap in 2015 under Roy Hodgson.

Having been on the sidelines for the rest of 2017, Mason ended the year on a high when he welcomed the birth of his son, George.

He was however yet to play a professional match since that incident and has now decided to retire from football.

Although the midfielder left at the beginning of the following season, he will always have a place in the hearts of the Tottenham supporters and the hope will be one day he can return to Spurs in some type of capacity.
