"Coach Aaron Feis was injured protecting a student in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and, at last report, is in critical condition".

Police say a gunman opened fire shortly before the school day ended on Wednesday.

In addition to being a coach for the school, Feis worked as the school's security guard for eight years and took his job very seriously, former student Andrew Hofmann said according to the outlet.

School officials declined to say why Mr. Cruz no longer attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

According to her, Cruz often joked about shooting people and/or establishments and would frequently talk about having guns and using them.

Three people were killed outside the school, while 12 were shot dead inside one of the buildings.

Who is behind the shooting?

The Broward sheriff's office has identified the suspect in Wednesday's deadly school shooting as 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, a former student who had been expelled for disciplinary reasons. He was enrolled at another Broward County school.

The students later recalled Cruz as an "outcast" and "quirky" person who would talk "sometimes about knives and guns".

"He was that weird kid that you see. like a loner", he added.

JROTC is a federal program where the US armed services attempt to "instill in students... the values of citizenship, service to the United States and personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment". He selflessly shielded students from the shooter when he was shot.

Wielding a semi-automatic AR-15 assault rifle, the perpetrator murdered at least 17 people on the school premises and nearby.

"The school is closed for the rest of the week, The district will offer grief counseling to students and their families. No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school", US President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter.
