Witness: Florida officer shot in neck; 4 children still held

An armed suspect barricaded himself in an Orlando, Florida, apartment with four children, including a 1-year-old, Monday morning after he allegedly shot and wounded an officer responding to a domestic violence call, authorities said.

The officer was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. SWAT officers are currently negotiating with the suspect; the rest of the apartment building has been evacuated and residents are being urged to avoid the area.

In a media briefing, Monday morning by Chief John Mina with the Orlando Police Department, the officer has serious and significant injuries from the shooting but is expected to survive.

Mina said they don't know if the man was shot. The children are ages 1, 7, 10 and 12. He asked the community for prayers for the officer and his family.

Police have not released the name of the suspect or the officer.

Judy Pepper, who lives in the apartment complex, told the Orlando Sentinel she had fallen asleep on the couch after watching the Sunday night baseball game on television when she heard four loud gunshots.

'Our main concern is the safety of the children in that apartment, ' Mina said. Then, the put him in a patrol car and sped away.

Mina said that a SWAT team is on site and has been trying to negotiate with the man.
